Comment: Hi. I love this site! I am doing some research for my father about his parents who lived in Pollockshaw Road where he was born in 1927. His parents had a fruit shop and I am trying to find out what it was called and any other information for dad. His mother was Margaret Johnston Hepburn (nee Masterton) and his dad was Douglas Stuart Hepburn. I know it's a long shot but I dream of being able to tell him about it and even see if there is a photo. If anyone can help please e-mail me. Alison

Comment: Anyone from the 50's remember Gina Harrison who worked at Strangs the butcher. I'm her daughter (Irene) and intersted in any names I remember from our building on Riverside Road - Margaret Tait, Lina Park, Elizabeth Ramsey and also a friend who often stayed with her Granny - Linda Anderson (who I believed moved to Canada). Any info on any of these folks would be much appreciated. From Irene in California.

Comment: My ancestor, James Tassie, son of William Tassie' was born in 1735 in Pollockshaws, Scotland. He became a famous gem modeler and died in 1799. I would like to find out more about one of his siblings, named David, born in 1750 but have come to a brick wall. The only entry in our family tree is that he married but his wife's name was not known and children are William, born 1777 and Ann, no birthdate. The Pollockshaws Heritage Group site is extremely interesting.

Comment: The 1881 census shows my g.grandparents,William Callaghan and Jane Callaghan nee Ritchie living at Eastwood with their daughter Helen Sinclair Callaghan.Their second daughter Jane Rafter Callaghan was born in 1881 at 60 King Street Pollockshaws. By the time of the 1891 census the family were living in Newcastle upon Tyne and their surname had changed to McCallum. I would be interested to know if there was any event in which William Callaghan could have been involved which would have led him to leave the area and change his name. Regards Malcolm McCallum

Comment: Hello there.I was born and bred in The Shaws.I was born Jan.1954.I lived at No.1 Coustonhill St.I recently obtained a copy of your D.V.D.I viewed for the first time today.I was absolutley astounded when I saw the Images of the Auld Shaws, truly amazed! It brought back Many Happy Memories indeed.I was particularly interested in one of the Photos which was taken at the corner of Coustonholm Rd.and Coustonhill St. Where, I could clearly see the Close where I stayed.I have a Picture of myself taken while I was climbing on some railings,I think this building was a Pottery or something like that, and the name on the building was Boyd.I was only a lad when the photo was taken,so I could well be wrong about that.I would also be interested in knowing more about your Organisation.Thankyou once again for the Great D.V.D its Fantastic. Eddie Ramsay.

Comment: Many a time in the 1930s I walked through the Shaws to a factory owned by my grandfather. The company was the "Eastwood Beetling Company" I had hoped that I might have seen a glimpse of it in the photos but unfortunately not.I do recall that it was located on the same road as Kennedy Dairies. Many of the photos were of areas that I remember.

Comment: I lived at 274 Shawbridge street from 1932 till 1946. My name was Ann Pirrie. I wonder if any of my old friends are still around - Eleanor Scott, Ann Taylor, Etta Madden, Moira Edgar.I've lived in the States for 54 years but Pollokshaws has always had a place in my heart. I remember the horse drawn coal cart, the gas street lights, playing peever, whip and peerie, summer nights that barely got dark - wonderfull memories.

Comment: Very interesting. My great grandparents - John Donald and Agnes Boyd - were married in 1881 at 63 Main Street (forms of the Free Church of Scotland). They lived at 36 Main Street. He was a blacksmith's hammerman and she a "confection merchant". So the Main Street photographs have special interest.

Comment: My grandmother Euphemia Lamont was born in 34 Pollock Street in 1895, went to the local school and later emigrated to NZ. I have a photo of her parents and their other children in front of the Carron Iron Works. I'm visiting the area on 12th-13th August and wonder if you have any suggestions for museums covering the late 1800s or anything else of relevance. I can send a file with the images i mentioned if I can get an email and contact name. Many thanks for your consideration, Ed Zanders, Cambridge

Comment: I have been excited about this website however could an old streetmap of the area be put on the site. In the 1861 census my great great grandfather lived at 14 King St. and his occupation was porter. I wonder if this was at the George Hotel? His son was a litho printer. Was there a printing works in Pollokshaw?

Comment: Hi, I just came accross your web site. It certainly brought back memories. I lived at 56 Haggs road, opposite Crow Hamilton, latterly Dollar Rae. I grew up in 60s Pollok. I hope to see more photographs on your site in the future. Do you have any of haggs road? My memories include Mr Nicol's grocery store at the end of Haggs road, Miss (Mrs) Millars grogery round the corner in Pollokshaws road and Dominics Fish & Chips in the Arcade. I live in South Africa now but still come back to the UK regularly but I haven't seen the 'Shaws in alost 30 years. From your description it sounds as though it's going through a tough time. Anyway many thanks for a trip down memory lane. Kind regards Gordon (Maxwell)

Comment: Fabulous site! Took me ages to wade through all the pics and try to place where the buildings were but I got there eventually and what happy memories they brought back. I was born and brought up in the Shaws from 1952 and lived there until I married in 1978. Born in Haggs Road and then moved to Birness Drive. Can you tell me if George Rowntree is the same person that lived at 36 Haggs Road? I remember the name from there and he had a son called Colin and I think there was another who's name I cannot remember. My mum worked in McClurgs fishmongers and was a weel kent face. Her name was Cathy McDougall nee Robertson. Anyone who would like to contact me please feel free. Thanks Lorna

Someone once told me it used to belong to the famous Barr family (irn bru) and then by the hepburn family (tailors). It was demolished in the sixties to make way for Hillpark School and the housing complex.

Comment: The views of the Cabin bar brought back memories. As kids in the 50's we would support our meagre incomes by jumping the fence through the close at the Campbell Library, retrieving some "stamped" beer bottles and receiving payment for them at the bar. Needless to say it wasn't long before we were rumbled !
